Abrasive for waterjet cutting

Choosing the right cutting abrasive will significantly affect the performance of the equipment and thus the profitability of waterjet cutting. Cutting abrasive must be correct from its hardness, density, toughness and shape.

Hardness

Waterjet cutting machines must be correctly balanced between cutting speed and wear on consumables. Soft cutting abrasive achieves longer focusing tube life, but at the same time slows down the cutting speed. Hard abrasive, particularly too hard in this case, allows for quick cut, but consumes the abrasive nozzle very quickly. Nozzle wear reduces the accuracy of the cutting process and easily results in unwanted downtime of the waterjet cutting machine. Cutting costs are increased by unplanned interruptions in production and high spare parts costs due to the frequent replacement of the nozzle.

Density

The force in waterjet cutting is a function of mass and velocity. Ideal abrasive contains the heaviest particles, which can be accelerated by the water jet to maximum speed. This produces the highest cutting force, because then the abrasive is optimized for the water jet speed. Too light abrasive particles do not have enough kinetic energy to penetrate the material to be cut. Correspondingly, too heavy abrasive particles do not accelerate to maximum speed, leaving the best kinetic energy unused.

Toughness

Toughness or, in other words fragility, directly affects how well waterjet cutting process works. Too fragile cutting abrasive will degrade already in the focusing tube or mixing chamber. This results in too fine abrasive particles and poor cutting performance.

Particle shape

Also, the shape of the abrasive particles is important. It is known that a spherical shape is an ideal mass carrier in a water jet, but the optimum cutting abrasive is a balanced mix of differently shaped particles. In the optimal cutting abrasive is considered the properties of acceleration, wearing and cut quality by correct particle shape distribution.
